Bengaluru recently hosted the finale of the C-CAMP National Bio Entrepreneurship Competition 2026 (NBEC 2026).

The ninth edition recognised 15 startups and four student teams for innovations across healthcare, agriculture and environmental technology. The winning startups received more than ₹35 crore in cash prizes and investment opportunities, while the four student teams received ₹4 lakh in cash awards.

The National Bio Entrepreneurship Competition is organised by the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Platforms (C-CAMP).

The platform identifies and supports biotechnology ventures working on practical solutions to major social and economic challenges.

The 2026 competition attracted more than 3,200 registrations from 34 states and Union Territories. It also saw participation from Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, while women innovators accounted for 40% of applicants.

The finale was held in Bengaluru with support from the Department of IT, BT and S&T, Government of Karnataka.

Fifteen startups were recognised during the 2026 competition.

Their innovations cover a wide range of areas. These include cancer diagnostics, kidney injury screening, bone regeneration, insulin delivery, surgical training and water treatment.

Agriculture and environmental solutions were also part of the winning projects.

For example, some recognised innovations focus on satellite-enabled agricultural spraying, soil-health bioformulations and compact greywater treatment systems.

This shows how biotechnology and deep technology are being applied beyond traditional healthcare.

The competition also recognised four student teams.

Each winning team received ₹1 lakh from C-CAMP.

The projects included sustainable plant-based meat alternatives, fibre extraction and bio-fabric development, cardiac diagnostics and AI-powered early screening for cerebral palsy.

The student category gives young innovators an opportunity to develop scientific ideas into practical solutions.

It also connects student research with entrepreneurship and industry support.

Agriculture was one of the key areas represented in the competition.

Among the recognised projects was Modern Village Future Innovations’ Agri Rover Vyom, which focuses on agricultural technology.

Another recognised solution, 1000 Farms Agritech’s Nitrogenie, focuses on microbial formulations designed to support soil health.

These projects reflect growing interest in technology that can address farm-level challenges.

Digital tools, biological inputs and data-driven farming could become important parts of future agricultural systems.

Environmental solutions were another important part of the 2026 awards.

One recognised project focuses on compact greywater treatment for homes. Such technologies can help address water treatment and reuse at the household level.

Other innovations in the competition covered sustainable materials and bio-based solutions.

The range of projects shows how biotechnology can intersect with agriculture, water management, healthcare and environmental sustainability.

The C-CAMP competition is not limited to awards.

The 2026 cohort also attracted follow-on investment interest.

According to the competition coverage, Social Alpha is investing ₹10 crore across six startups. Ideaspring Capital has committed ₹15 crore across three startups. Other participating investors include IIMA Ventures, Enzia Ventures, Indian Healthcare Angels, Java Capital, C-CAMP, TiE Global and Anicut Capital.

This creates a pathway for selected innovations to move beyond the competition stage.

The 2026 edition also adds to the competition’s longer record.

Across its previous eight editions, NBEC had awarded more than ₹90 crore in cash prizes and investment opportunities to over 130 winners.

Its alumni have collectively raised more than $125 million in venture capital and launched more than 300 products in India and international markets, according to competition organisers and event coverage.

These figures highlight the role of entrepreneurship platforms in connecting scientific research with business development.

Awards such as NBEC can provide more than recognition.

Startups receive opportunities for mentorship, investment and industry connections. Student teams can also gain visibility for their research and prototypes.

For agriculture and environmental technology, this support can be particularly useful.

Many solutions in these sectors require testing, field validation and partnerships before they can reach large numbers of users.

The C-CAMP National Bio Entrepreneurship Competition 2026 brought several sectors together under one innovation platform.

Healthcare remained a major focus. However, agriculture, water management, environmental technology and sustainable materials were also represented.

The participation of more than 3,200 applicants shows the breadth of interest in biotechnology entrepreneurship across India.

As these innovations move toward development and commercialisation, they could contribute to new approaches in healthcare, farming and environmental management.

For the awards sector, the C-CAMP event also highlights how recognition programmes are increasingly becoming platforms for innovation, mentorship and entrepreneurship.
