Farming is beginning to offer farmers a new kind of opportunity.
In Goa, farmers are now being introduced to the voluntary carbon market, where climate-friendly farming practices can potentially create additional economic value.
The initiative was highlighted by the ICAR–Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute (ICAR-CCARI) on August 25, 2026. The institute, in collaboration with Core CarbonX Solutions, organised a workshop called “Carbon Pathshala: Voluntary Carbon Market for Farmers” at ICAR-KVK, Old Goa, on August 21.
A carbon market is a system where reductions or removals of greenhouse-gas emissions can be measured and traded through carbon credits.
For farmers, this creates a possible new connection between farming and climate action.
Practices that improve soil health, increase tree cover or reduce emissions can sometimes contribute to carbon projects.
However, farmers do not automatically receive carbon payments simply by adopting sustainable practices. Projects need proper measurement, verification and market arrangements.
